Something for the Blues: HELLBLAZER & CONSTANTINE...
Was Hellblazer something of a misstep? Was it a compromise by an Editorial team that couldn’t see their way clear on certain points of John Constantine’s DNA? It’s hard to pose these questions in the light of how successful Hellblazer has become over the years.
I wanted to grapple with these questions from the point of both the outgoing Hellblazer title, and the incoming...

Kicking off on Warren Zevon →
It’s a good enough start, I guess…Warren Zevon & UNCANNY AVENGERS.

This is not a reboot… →
Marvel EIC Axel Alonso states: “It is not a reboot. We don’t travel back in time, into the future, or to an alternate universe. Marvel NOW! respects the investment—emotional and financial—that long-term fans have made in the Marvel Universe, and this story takes place in a Marvel Universe they can recognize, one that grows out of Avengers Vs. X-Men. That said, these stories will be...
Ad Fontes: Erasmus & postwar America →
So the first wave of our coverage for the closing down of BEFORE WATCHMEN is up today. And it seems I’ve kicked the lid off of something worthwhile and reasonable—how postwar America must have looked like, felt like a High Renaissance Europe. What with the same kinds of cultural compromise going on at Europe in that time, the metaphor isn’t a bad one for America just prior to the...
Rob's writing DEMON KNIGHTS as of #16
Ever since SURROGATES, I’ve been a Fan of Robert Venditti’s. The narrative trick he pulled during the sequel mini-series (FLESH & BONE) demonstrated a superior ability, a command of the comics form, and indeed of storytelling mechanics, that should usually takes decades to acquire.
The idea of Rob now crafting stories that will inform centuries of the fictive DC Universe is a...
The Center Cannot Hold'em →
There’s more work to be done on this particular constellation. Vegas and the geography of choice, the end of Empire and James Bond surveillance architecture.

In my hands
Every single time I pick up my copy of FEAR & LOATHING AT ROLLING STONE and hold it in my hand it feels like I’m burning daylight.
I’ve got a Modern Classics edition, wild and ferocious and neat. A tiny compact edition that feels heavier for the ideas it holds.
Jann Werner writes: “a story about himself, who as, after all, his own greatest character”. In BOB DYLAN...
Made Me Do It →
Needs a little refining but it’s up. The core of it, being the idea that one conversation in one context can be abstracted and recontextualized.

Return to Form... →
Dan sends me an interesting link on PRI, about the Belgian comicbook industry’s aspiration to return to form just as I begin to read (again) “A Dog Took my Place”, HST in ROLLING STONE in ‘82.
Weird how synchronicity’s been riding high ever since October. A fact Katie reminds me of in an elegantly well-timed quote from tinybuddha.com about confluence.

It’s just gorgeous and opens the story in a way that neither Daniel Craig’s movie nor the original Swedish version did.
Reminds me of an older idea, the every artwork is struggling to express itself time and again, across multiple versions, across different mediums.
Is this idea Platonic, anti-Platonic or something else entirely?

While I continue to work...
I doubt if I’ll ever really understand why it is I find Exam so disturbing. But it does make a good mood movie while I continue to work. I should think about lacing in some Tom Waits into the X-O Manowar piece.

How do we reenter X-O Manowar nearly two decades after? Maybe thru Lorenzo de Medici’s letter to his son?

The Art of FanFic: BLACK ROCK SHOOTER
Something to walk back to the hotel in the rain to, vendettadays’ Nothing has Changed.
It’s a work of Black Rock Shooter fanfic that does well in capturing the tone of the original work quite well. And also, does well in capturing the spirit of fan fiction itself.
